Right
or Wrong
On January 6, 2005 David Holcberg published “U.S
Should Not Help Tsunami Victims” in the Corpus Christi Caller Times; it discussed a very controversial subject. Holcberg states that his
belief is that the U.S. should not send any money to other
countries such as Asia for the Tsunami. Holcberg believes that all the hard-earned money that we give
to other counties is wrongly given and that the money is still ours.
Is the money ours?
Yes, the money is ours but once it is given to the government it pretty much becomes theirs. The taxpayers may have given
the money to the government but that does not mean the government will go crazy and spend it on what they want to spend it
on. The tax money will be given to where it needs to go but only if the taxpayers vote on it. So when Holcberg says that the
government should not give the money away that is not the government’s decision, it is really him and the rest of the
taxpayers that determine.
Taxes are funds
that benefit our countries because it is the way to pay for things that need to be done or it is used in a time of crises.
So when another country is in need this is the perfect way to help out, it offers money that is especially for emergencies
even if it is in another country. Even if the money is for these situations, the taxpayers always have a say in it before
the government can act on it and give the money away. Another factor is why would Holcberg not want to help other people in
need? Asia might not belong to this country but it has people just like us that are having a major
situation and we have money to help, so why not help? No one can go wrong when they are saving other people’s lives
or providing necessary essentials for the people. Some day our country might be in a bind with a disaster and we will need
help, will they help us if we did not help them in their time of need? No, they will not because the pure fact that, “do
onto other as you would do onto yourself.”
